Tayammum: performing wudu without water when you are ill or travelling
When water is missing or harmful to your health, the Qur’an allows tayammum: a dry purification with clean earth. Conditions, steps, real cases (hospital, cast, plane) and differences between schools.

A concession written in the Qur’an
Islam asks for purity before prayer, but it never imposes the impossible. When water is lacking, or when using it would endanger your health, the Qur’an opens another way: تيمم tayammum, literally “heading towards”, that is, turning to clean earth in order to purify oneself. The verse that describes wudu also describes, in the same sentence, this substitute:
The same principle appears in Surat an-Nisā’ (4:43). So this is not a last-resort allowance invented later: it is a rule of the revelation, which ends with these words: “Allah does not want to place any hardship on you.”
What the Prophet ﷺ said about it
The Prophet ﷺ presented purification with earth as a privilege granted to his community:
Narrated by Jabir ibn ‘Abdillah (may Allah be pleased with him)
The Prophet ﷺ said: “I have been given five things that were given to no one before me: […] the earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a means of purification; so whoever among my community is overtaken by the time of prayer, let him pray wherever he is.”
The actions themselves were shown to ‘Ammar ibn Yasir, who, while travelling, had rolled himself in the dust for lack of water, thinking he had to cover his whole body:
Narrated by ‘Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abza (may Allah be pleased with him)
A man came to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab and said: “I am in a state of major impurity and I have not found any water.” ‘Ammar ibn Yasir then said to ‘Umar: “Do you remember that journey when we were both in that state? You did not pray; as for me, I rolled myself in the earth and prayed. I mentioned it to the Prophet ﷺ, who said to me: ‘It would have been enough for you to do this.’ And he struck the earth with his hands, blew on them, then passed them over his face and his hands.”
This account settles the essentials: a single light strike, the face, then the hands. There is no need to cover yourself in dust.
When can tayammum be performed?
Scholars sum up the situations in two broad families:
- Water is absent: travelling through a place with no water, a prolonged breakdown, water reserved for drinking or for the care of a sick person, water that is too far away or dangerous to reach.
- Water would cause harm: an illness that water would worsen or delay, a wound, a burn, a cast or dressing that must not get wet, extreme cold with no way of warming the water when there is a real risk to health.
In both cases the general rule remains the same: religion is ease.
Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him)
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Religion is ease. No one makes himself excessive in religion without it ending up overcoming him. Aim for what is right, come as close to it as you can, rejoice, and seek help in the morning, in the evening and in part of the night.”
The steps, one by one
Steps
Form the intention in your heart: to purify yourself in order to pray (or to touch the Qur’an, depending on the school).
Say “bismillah”.
Lightly strike, once, a clean earthy surface with both palms: ground, sand, stone, an unpainted wall of earth or stone, settled dust.
Blow on your hands or gently shake them to remove the excess dust.
Pass both hands over the whole face.
Pass the left palm over the back of the right hand up to the wrist, then the right palm over the back of the left hand.
Pray. Tayammum replaces minor wudu and ghusl alike.
Whatever invalidates wudu also invalidates tayammum; one special case is added: finding usable water before the prayer, or ceasing to be ill. You then perform wudu normally. If water is found after the prayer, the prayer already performed remains valid according to the majority of scholars.
Concrete cases
In hospital
A person who is bedridden, on a drip or cannot be moved may perform tayammum on a wall, a dusty tiled surface or, according to many scholars, on a stone or a little clean earth brought in a container. A relative or a carer may help with the actions. What matters is the intention and the regularity of the prayers, even sitting or lying down: see Learning to pray as a beginner.
Cast, dressing, wound
If only one part of the body cannot be wetted, the majority of scholars recommend performing wudu normally on the rest, passing a wet hand over the dressing (mash), and, for some schools, completing it with a tayammum. If any contact with water is impossible, you perform tayammum only.
On a plane or on the road
On a plane, water is generally available at the sinks: perform wudu with little water, like the Prophet ﷺ, who was content with a small amount. Tayammum is permitted only if water is truly out of reach. The prayer itself can be shortened and combined while travelling: see Prayer while travelling.
Elderly people
Old age is not, in itself, a reason for tayammum; but fragile skin, a wound that does not heal or a risk of falling on the way to the water may be. In that case, the concession is a mercy, not laxity.
What to remember
Tayammum is a door opened by the Qur’an so that no one is cut off from prayer. It asks little: a sincere intention, a clean earthy surface, the face and the hands. Learn the steps before you need them; you will be at ease the day water runs out.

Questions fréquentes
Can tayammum be done on a wall or on tiles?
On an unpainted wall of earth or stone, yes, according to most schools. On tiles or another smooth surface, it depends on whether there is dust and on the school you follow: the Shafi‘is require earth or sand, while the Hanafis and Malikis accept any material from the earth. If in doubt, a little clean earth in a container settles the question.
Should it be one strike or two?
The hadith of ‘Ammar (Sahih al-Bukhari no. 338) describes a single strike, for the face and the hands; this is the view held by the Hanbalis and many hadith scholars. The Hanafis and Shafi‘is hold to two strikes, the second for the arms up to the elbows. Both practices are recognised.
Is one tayammum valid for several prayers?
Yes, according to the Hanafis, as long as it has not been invalidated. The Malikis, Shafi‘is and Hanbalis require a new tayammum for each obligatory prayer. Follow your school or ask a qualified person.
I prayed with tayammum and then found water: do I have to repeat the prayer?
According to the majority of scholars, the prayer already performed is valid and does not have to be repeated; you simply perform wudu with water for the following prayers.
Does tayammum also replace ghusl (the major ablution)?
Yes. When water is lacking or harmful to health, tayammum replaces the major ablution in the same way, with the same actions, as the account of ‘Ammar and ‘Umar shows.
