Wudu (ablutions) step by step: obligations, sunnahs and common mistakes

How to perform wudu step by step: the acts required by the Qur’an, the sunnahs of the Prophet ﷺ, what breaks it and the mistakes people make most often.

A thin stream of clear water pours from a brass ewer into a stone basin, next to a folded towel and a prayer rug.

Why wudu matters so much

Before every prayer, a Muslim washes in a very specific way: this is the minor ablution, الوُضُوء (wudu, the purification before prayer). It is not a simple hygiene wash: it is an act of worship, performed with the intention of preparing to stand before Allah. The Qur’an itself describes its essential acts:

The same verse opens a door of ease: in case of illness or when no water is available, one resorts to tayammum, the dry ablution. The Prophet ﷺ reminded us that prayer depends on this purification:

Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The prayer of one who has broken his state of purity is not accepted until he performs wudu again.” A man from Hadramawt asked: “What is breaking one’s state of purity, Abu Hurayra?” He replied: “Passing wind, whether silent or loud.”

Wudu also has an inner dimension, which the Prophet ﷺ described act by act:

Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When a Muslim servant, or a believing one, performs wudu and washes his face, every sin his eyes looked upon leaves his face with the water, or with the last drop of water. When he washes his hands, every sin committed by his hands leaves them with the water. When he washes his feet, every sin his feet walked toward leaves with the water, until he comes out purified of his sins.”
Sahîh Muslim n° 244aSahih (authentic) · MuslimView on sunnah.com
Tawakoul translation; the Arabic text is the reference.

He also said: “Purity is half of faith” (Muslim no. 223a). Performing wudu unhurriedly, keeping this meaning in mind, turns an everyday act into a moment of calm before prayer.

Scholars distinguish two levels. The obligations (فَرْض fard, what is indispensable) are the acts without which wudu is not valid. The sunnahs are the acts the Prophet ﷺ habitually performed: one is rewarded for doing them, but forgetting them does not invalidate wudu. All the schools agree on the four acts of the verse:

  • washing the whole face, from the hairline to the chin and from one ear to the other;
  • washing the arms, from the fingertips up to and including the elbows;
  • wiping the head with wet hands;
  • washing the feet up to and including the ankles.

Wudu step by step

Here is the full sequence, as it emerges from the descriptions left by the Companions. Each limb may be washed once, twice or three times: once is enough, three times is the most complete way.

Steps

  1. Form the intention in your heart: to purify yourself for prayer. There is no need to say it aloud.

  2. Say bismillah (in the name of Allah).

  3. Wash the hands up to the wrists, three times.

  4. Rinse the mouth, then sniff a little water into the nose and blow it out, three times.

  5. Wash the face three times, running the fingers through the beard if it is thick.

  6. Wash the right arm up to and including the elbow, three times, then the left arm.

  7. Pass the wet hands over the head, from the forehead to the nape, then back to the forehead.

  8. Wipe the ears: the inside with the index fingers, the back with the thumbs.

  9. Wash the right foot up to and including the ankle, three times, passing between the toes, then the left foot.

  10. Say the declaration of faith and, if you wish, the supplications for the end of wudu.

The best-known account on this subject comes from Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), who once showed how the Prophet ﷺ performed wudu:

Narrated by Humran, freed slave of Uthman ibn Affan

Uthman asked for a vessel of water. He poured water over his hands three times and washed them, then he put his right hand into the vessel, rinsed his mouth and his nose. Next he washed his face three times, his arms up to the elbows three times, passed his wet hands over his head, then washed his feet up to the ankles three times. Then he said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever performs wudu like this one of mine, then prays two units without letting his thoughts distract him, his past sins will be forgiven.”

Another Companion, Abdullah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), described how to wipe the head: both hands start at the forehead, go back to the nape, then return to the starting point (al-Bukhari no. 185).

Children learn above all by imitation: perform wudu in front of them, slowly, naming each act, and follow the illustrated guide to wudu together. Praise their effort rather than correcting every detail.

The sunnahs that beautify wudu

  • Starting with the right for the arms and the feet: Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reports that the Prophet ﷺ liked to start with the right side in his purification (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
  • The siwak, a twig used to clean the teeth: the Prophet ﷺ said that, had he not feared making it a hardship for his community, he would have commanded it at every prayer (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
  • Saving water: he performed wudu with about one mudd, the contents of two cupped hands (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
  • Washing the hands on waking before dipping them into a vessel.

Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “When one of you wakes from his sleep, let him not dip his hand into the water for his wudu before washing it three times, for none of you knows where his hand spent the night.”

Finally, the sunnah invites us to conclude with the declaration of faith:

Narrated by Uqba ibn Amir, from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is none among you who performs wudu with care, then says: ash-hadu an la ilaha illa-llah, wa anna Muhammadan abdu-llahi wa rasuluh (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His messenger), without the eight gates of Paradise being opened for him: he will enter by whichever he chooses.”

Common mistakes

  • Leaving a part dry, especially the heels, the elbows or the edge of the face. Seeing some heels that had stayed dry, the Prophet ﷺ warned: “Woe to the heels because of the Fire” (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
  • Keeping a waterproof layer: nail polish, glue or thick paint keep water from reaching the skin. Henna, which stains without covering, does not pose this problem.
  • Wasting water or washing more than three times: this is not more pious, it is moving away from the sunnah.
  • Letting doubt take over (waswas) to the point of starting everything again. To a man who thought he felt something during prayer, the Prophet ﷺ said not to leave it unless he heard a sound or smelled an odor (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

What breaks wudu

Once performed, wudu remains valid for several prayers as long as it is not broken. The causes recognized by all are:

  • urinating, relieving oneself or passing wind;
  • deep sleep (for most scholars, light drowsiness while sitting does not break it);
  • loss of consciousness: fainting, anesthesia, intoxication.

After marital relations or at the end of menstruation, it is not the minor ablution that is required but ghusl, the major ablution of the whole body.

Questions fréquentes

How long does wudu remain valid?

There is no time limit: wudu remains valid as long as it is not broken (natural needs, passing wind, deep sleep, loss of consciousness). You can therefore perform several prayers with the same wudu. Renewing it for each prayer remains a good habit.

Does nail polish prevent wudu from being valid?

Ordinary nail polish forms a layer that keeps water from reaching the nail: it must be removed before wudu for it to be valid. Henna, which stains without covering, does not pose this problem. For polishes advertised as “breathable”, opinions differ: ask a qualified person.

Can you perform wudu without taking off your socks?

The sunnah allows wiping over the top of leather socks (khuffs) put on while in a state of purity, for a limited period according to the majority of scholars. For cloth socks, the schools do not agree. Before adopting this practice, ask a qualified person for advice.

Do you have to say the intention for wudu aloud?

The intention lies in the heart: knowing that you are washing in order to pray is enough. Some scholars recommend saying it quietly, others do not. In any case, pronouncing it is not a condition for validity.

What should I do if I doubt that I have broken my wudu?

A certainty is not erased by a doubt: if you are sure you performed wudu and only doubt whether you broke it, it remains valid. The Prophet ﷺ taught not to leave the prayer on a mere impression. If the doubts become overwhelming, talk to someone you trust.

What should one do if ill or without water?

The verse on wudu provides for tayammum, a purification with clean earth, for the sick and for whoever cannot find water. Its conditions and its steps are precise: for a particular health situation, consult a qualified person.
