Yusuf (peace be upon him): from the Well to the Palace, Three Lessons for Today
The story of Yusuf (peace be upon him) as told in Surah 12: jealousy, the well, prison and reunion, then three lessons in patience, integrity and forgiveness.

The best of stories
Surah 12 of the Quran bears the name of Yusuf (peace be upon him), the Joseph of the Bible. It is the only surah that tells the story of a prophet from beginning to end in one continuous narrative. Allah Himself presents it this way:
The Prophet ﷺ highlighted the exceptional nobility of this lineage:
Narrated by ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them)
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The noble, son of the noble, son of the noble, son of the noble: Yusuf, son of Ya‘qub, son of Ishaq, son of Ibrahim (peace be upon them).”
The word الْكَرِيم (al-karim) means at once noble, generous and dignified. Four generations of prophets follow one another in this sentence. Yet the surah does not tell of an easy life: it shows how a child betrayed by his brothers becomes, through patience and integrity, a man who forgives. You can also discover his illustrated story.
The story in brief, according to the Quran
- The dream: as a child, Yusuf sees in a dream eleven stars, the sun and the moon prostrating themselves before him. His father Ya‘qub (peace be upon him) advises him not to tell it to his brothers (verses 4 and 5).
- The jealousy: the brothers, convinced that their father prefers Yusuf and his younger brother, decide to get rid of him. One of them proposes throwing him to the bottom of a well rather than killing him (verses 8 to 10).
- The lie: they bring back his tunic stained with false blood, claiming that a wolf devoured him (verses 16 to 18).
- The exile: a caravan picks him up and sells him in Egypt. He grows up in the house of a high dignitary, al-‘Aziz (verses 19 to 22).
- The trial: his master’s wife tries to seduce him; he refuses and ends up unjustly in prison, where he stays for several years (verses 23 to 42).
- The deliverance: he interprets the king’s dream, announces seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine, and becomes responsible for the country’s reserves (verses 43 to 56).
- The reunion: the famine drives his brothers to come looking for grain. He eventually makes himself known to them, forgives them and brings the whole family over to join him (verses 58 to 101).
First lesson: beautiful patience
When his sons announce Yusuf’s death to him, Ya‘qub (peace be upon him) does not believe them, but he does not scream and does not cut ties with them:
C'est Allah qu'il faut appeler au secours contre ce que vous racontez!»“Beautiful patience,” صَبْرٌ جَمِيل (sabrun jamil), is explained by the commentators as patience without complaint addressed to people. It does not prevent sadness: years later, Ya‘qub is still weeping for his son and says: “I only complain of my anguish and my sorrow to Allah” (verse 86). One can have a broken heart and remain patient: complaint is voiced to Allah, in prayer and supplication.
Yusuf, for his part, goes through the well, exile and prison without losing his faith or his kindness. In prison, he listens to his companions, explains their dreams to them and speaks to them of the oneness of Allah, التَّوْحِيد (tawhid) (verses 37 to 40). The Prophet ﷺ described this state of the believer who finds good in every situation:
Narrated by Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “How wonderful is the affair of the believer: everything that happens to him is good for him, and this belongs to no one but the believer. If something pleasing happens to him, he gives thanks, and that is good for him. If something harmful happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him.”
Today, the trial may be an injustice at work, an illness, a break-up or a wait that drags on. The surah does not teach that everything will be quick, but that nothing is lost with Allah. To go further, see Patience (sabr) in daily life.
Second lesson: staying upright when no one is watching
In his master’s house, Yusuf is young, alone, far from his family, and the doors are closed. His answer takes just two words, مَعَاذَ اللَّه (ma‘adha Allah), “may Allah protect me,” followed by a reminder of the kind welcome he has received (verse 23). When he is threatened with prison, he makes this prayer:
Et si Tu n'écartes pas de moi leur ruse, je pencherai vers elles et serai du nombre des ignorants» [des pécheurs].Yusuf does not think himself stronger than temptation: he asks for Allah’s help and prefers to lose his freedom rather than his integrity. The Prophet ﷺ counted among the seven people whom Allah will shelter in His shade on the Day of Judgement a man solicited by a woman of rank and beauty, who answers: “I fear Allah” (reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim).
Later, when the king wants to free him, Yusuf refuses to leave until his innocence has been recognised (verse 50). The Prophet ﷺ praised this patience by saying that, had he stayed in prison as long as Yusuf, he would have answered at once the one who came to fetch him (reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim). Truth and honour mattered more to Yusuf than a quick release.
For us, this lesson is often played out in front of a screen, in an empty office or when faced with a chance to cheat. Integrity is what we do when no one sees us except Allah.
Third lesson: forgiving when one has the power
Years later, the brothers stand before Yusuf, who has become responsible for Egypt’s reserves, without recognising him. He could take revenge. Here is what he says:
لَا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ (la tathriba ‘alaykumu al-yawm): “no reproach against you today.” He does not humiliate them, does not demand detailed apologies, and even asks Allah to forgive them. Later, in telling his story, he thanks Allah for bringing him out of prison, without mentioning the well, and attributes the discord to Satan rather than to his brothers (verse 100). It is a rare delicacy: not reopening the wound of those one has forgiven.
The Prophet ﷺ showed that forgiveness raises the one who grants it:
Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Charity does not diminish wealth in any way. Allah adds nothing but honour to a servant who forgives. And no one humbles himself for Allah without Allah raising him.”
Forgiving does not mean denying what happened or putting oneself in danger again. The story also shows that the brothers have changed: they propose that one of them be held in place of the youngest, and the eldest refuses to go home without him (verses 78 to 80). Forgiveness can take time; in the surah, it remains the summit of the story.
Jealousy between brothers and sisters: a message for families
The surah begins with a jealousy, حَسَد (hasad), that nearly ended in tragedy. The Prophet ﷺ warned against this poison:
Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not envy one another, do not outbid one another, do not hate one another, do not turn your backs on one another, and let none of you sell over the sale of another. Be, servants of Allah, brothers. The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim: he does not oppress him, does not abandon him and does not despise him. Piety is here,” and he pointed to his chest three times. “It is enough evil for a man to despise his Muslim brother. Every Muslim is sacred to every Muslim: his blood, his property and his honour.”
For parents, a few ideas inspired by the story:
- spend one-on-one time with each child, so that each feels loved;
- avoid comparisons (“your brother, he…”) and hurtful nicknames;
- stay discreet about what could stir up jealousy, as Ya‘qub advised Yusuf (verse 5);
- take resentments between children seriously before they grow;
- set an example of forgiveness after an argument.
The surah ends with this reminder: these stories are not invented, they are a lesson for people of understanding (verse 111).

Questions fréquentes
Why is Surah Yusuf called “the best of stories”?
The Quran itself presents it this way in verse 3. It tells the whole life of a prophet in one continuous narrative, from childhood to the reunion with his family, and brings together many lessons: patience, integrity, trust in Allah and forgiveness.
Are Yusuf and Joseph the same prophet?
Yes, Yusuf (peace be upon him) is the prophet whom the Bible calls Joseph, son of Jacob. The Quranic account shares the broad outline of the story but differs on several details; this article relies only on the Quran and the authentic hadiths.
What was the name of al-‘Aziz’s wife?
Neither the Quran nor the authentic hadiths name her. The name “Zulaykha” comes from later traditions, as does the idea of a marriage with Yusuf. It may be found in some translations, but it is not established by reliable sources.
What does “sabrun jamil,” beautiful patience, mean?
It is the answer of Ya‘qub (peace be upon him) to the disappearance of his son (verse 18). Commentators explain it as patience without complaint addressed to people: one may weep and be sad, but one entrusts one’s pain to Allah.
What lesson can families draw from the story of Yusuf?
The story shows how jealousy between brothers can grow into tragedy, and how forgiveness can reunite a family. For parents, it invites us to be fair, to avoid comparisons and to set an example of reconciliation.
