A bond built on affection and mercy

The Quran does not present marriage as a mere contract, but as one of the signs of Allah:

Quran Ar-Room 30:21 · Muhammad Hamidullah’s French translationRead in the Quran

Three words sum up this verse. The سَكَن (sakan): tranquility, the refuge where one comes to rest. The مَوَدَّة (mawadda): affection that shows itself, in words and in gestures. The رَحْمَة (rahma): mercy, which takes over when the first impulse wears thin with tiredness, illness or the years.

The Quran also uses a very strong image: spouses are “a garment” for one another (2:187). A garment protects, warms, covers flaws and is worn as close to oneself as possible. A couple is called to do the same: to protect each other, to support each other and to safeguard the other’s privacy.

The Prophet’s ﷺ example at home

People are sometimes judged by their reputation outside. The Prophet ﷺ shifted the gaze toward the home:

Narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family. […]”

He also said that the believer with the most complete faith is the one with the best character, and that the best of people are those who are best to their wives (at-Tirmidhi no. 1162). Gentleness, patience and courtesy are therefore not reserved for guests: they begin at home.

When Aisha was asked what the Prophet ﷺ did at home, she answered that he was in the service of his family, and that when the time of prayer came he went out to pray. This account is reported by al-Bukhari. The one who carried Allah’s message to people did not find it beneath him to help with the tasks of the household.

Reciprocal rights

The Quran reminds us that wives have rights equal to their obligations, “in accordance with what is fair” (2:228). The Sunnah describes each person as responsible for a domain:

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock. The ruler is a shepherd and is responsible for his subjects. A man is a shepherd in his family and is responsible for them. A woman is a shepherd in her husband’s house and is responsible for what is in her charge. […] Each of you is a shepherd, and each is responsible for his flock.”

Among the rights that scholars mention for both spouses:

  • respect, kind words and faithfulness;
  • care for the other’s privacy and modesty, never disclosing what goes on within the couple;
  • consultation in decisions that concern the family;
  • for the husband, the responsibility of providing financially for the household, without contempt or reproach; the Prophet ﷺ said that it is enough sin for a man to neglect those he is responsible for (Abu Dawud no. 1692).

Beyond legal debates, the practical question remains simple: how can the burden of the household be shared so that no one is worn out? Work schedules, children and each person’s health change over the years; talking about it regularly prevents silent resentment.

Communicating with gentleness

Many arguments do not come from a real disagreement, but from a poor way of expressing it. A few habits profoundly change the climate of a home:

Steps

  1. Choose the moment: do not bring up a sensitive subject when one of you is tired, hungry or in a hurry.

  2. Listen to the end, without preparing your reply, then rephrase: “If I understand correctly, you feel…”

  3. Speak about yourself rather than accusing: “I feel lonely when…” rather than “you never do anything”.

  4. Deal with one subject at a time, without dredging up past reproaches.

  5. Never humiliate the other, whether in front of the children, in front of the family, or on social media.

  6. Thank the other for what they do, even when it seems normal, and say it out loud.

The Quran asks spouses to treat each other “with kindness”, and adds: “if you feel aversion toward them during married life, it may be that you feel aversion toward something in which Allah has placed great good” (4:19). Looking also at the other’s qualities, and not only at what irritates, is part of this wisdom.

When tensions arise

No couple escapes disagreements. The Sunnah invites us to accept that the other is different, rather than wanting to remake them in our own image:

Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbor. And advise one another to treat women well, for they were created from a rib, and the most crooked part of the rib is its upper part: if you try to straighten it, you will break it; if you leave it, it will remain crooked. So advise one another to treat women well.”

Tawakoul translation; the Arabic text is the reference.

An-Nawawi sees in it an encouragement to gentleness, kindness toward wives and patience. Trying to “straighten” the other through harshness only breaks the bond. The hadith is addressed to husbands, but the lesson holds for both: accept differences and do not look for perfection.

When conflict drags on, the Quran proposes a concrete approach:

Quran An-Nisaa 4:35 · Muhammad Hamidullah’s French translationRead in the Quran

Today, this mediation can take the form of a wise relative from each family, a trained imam, a marriage counselor or a family mediator. The Quran also reminds us that “reconciliation is better” (4:128): seeking a compromise is not a defeat, it is a victory for the couple.

Nurturing affection over the years

Marital love is not an awkward subject in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said that, of this world, he had been made to love women and perfume, and that the coolness of his eyes was in prayer (an-Nasa’i no. 3939). Taking care of yourself for the other, setting aside time for two, laughing together, offering a small gift or a tender word: these are simple acts that nurture the mawadda.

Believers also make supplication for their marriage with the Quran’s prayer: (Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a‘yun), “Our Lord, grant us, in our spouses and our offspring, the joy of our eyes” (25:74). Praying for one another, in secret, is perhaps the most beautiful gesture of love.

Questions fréquentes

What are the rights of the husband and the wife in Islam?

Both spouses owe each other respect, kind words, faithfulness and the protection of their privacy. The husband is responsible for the household’s financial upkeep, and each is responsible for their own domain according to the hadith of the shepherd. The details vary between the legal schools: for a specific situation, consult a qualified person.

Did the Prophet ﷺ help with the housework?

Yes. Aisha reported that he was in the service of his family and that he went out for prayer when its time came, according to an account reported by al-Bukhari. It is a model of sharing and humility for couples today.

How can we communicate better as a couple?

Choose a calm moment, listen to the end, rephrase, talk about what you feel rather than accusing, deal with one subject at a time and give thanks often. Never humiliate the other in front of the children, the family or online.

What does Islam say in case of marital conflict?

The Quran recommends reconciliation (4:128) and proposes mediation by an arbiter from each family (4:35). Today, a marriage counselor, a family mediator or a trained imam can play this role. Serious decisions, such as a separation, are a matter for a qualified person.

Is domestic violence tolerated in Islam?

Violence, in all its forms, goes against the affection and mercy that the Quran places at the heart of marriage. No one should endure it in the name of patience or religion. In France, call 3919, or 17 in an emergency; elsewhere in Europe, 112.
