A small folded prayer rug next to a laptop and a cup, on a desk bathed in light: prayer within the working day.

Prayer, an appointment at fixed times… but with some leeway

Praying at work worries many employees: fear of colleagues’ looks, of the employer’s refusal, or simply of not managing it. Some good news first: each prayer has a time window, from the beginning of its time until the beginning of the next prayer (or a little before, depending on the case). The Qur’an recalls this principle:

These appointments are not one more constraint, but a breathing space in the day. The Prophet ﷺ compared them to a bath that purifies:

Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him)

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “If a river flowed at the door of one of you and he bathed in it five times a day, would any dirt remain on him?” They replied: “No dirt would remain on him.” He said: “Such is the example of the five prayers: through them, Allah wipes away sins.”

In France, the number of prayers to fit into the working day depends on the season. In winter, dhuhr, ‘asr and sometimes maghrib fall during office hours; in summer, it is often only dhuhr. The prayer times for your city give you each day the beginning of each window.

Preparing your day in five steps

Prayer needs neither a mosque nor a large space: according to a hadith reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim, the whole earth was made a place of prayer for the Prophet ﷺ and his community. A little organization is enough.

Steps

  1. In the morning, check the day’s times and note the window of each prayer that will fall during work.

  2. Do your wudu before leaving and try to keep it; plan what you need to redo it discreetly (a small bottle of water, a towel).

  3. Find a quiet, clean place: an empty office, a free meeting room, a little-used room, a parked car. A folding mat or a clean towel is enough.

  4. Fit the prayer into a break: lunch for dhuhr, a coffee break for ‘asr. An obligatory prayer generally lasts five to ten minutes.

  5. Work out the direction of the qibla once and for all, and have a plan B in case a meeting runs over: pray a little later, always within the window.

What labor law says in France

A few general markers for the private sector:

  • the Labor Code forbids any discrimination based on religious convictions (article L1132-1), and restrictions on freedoms must be justified and proportionate (article L1121-1);
  • there is no right to a specific break for praying: prayer takes place during break times, or during time granted by the employer;
  • the law provides for a break of at least twenty minutes after six hours of daily work (article L3121-16), often enough for a prayer;
  • the internal regulations may include a neutrality clause limiting the expression of convictions, if it is justified and proportionate (article L1321-2-1).

In the civil service, officials are subject to a duty of neutrality while on duty: they pray outside working time or during their breaks, out of public view.

Talking it through rather than opposing

Most difficulties are settled by a simple, respectful conversation. A few tips:

  • ask rather than impose, and offer a concrete solution: “I will take ten minutes of my break” or “I will make up this time at the end of the day”;
  • stay discreet: avoid corridors, places of passage and spaces open to the public;
  • answer curious colleagues’ questions simply, without trying to convince them;
  • never make prayer a subject of confrontation.

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged giving up disputes, even when one feels in the right:

Narrated by Abu Umama (may Allah be pleased with him)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “I guarantee a home on the outskirts of Paradise for the one who gives up disputing even if he is in the right, a home in the middle of Paradise for the one who gives up lying even in jest, and a home in the highest part of Paradise for the one who beautifies his character.”

A punctual, honest and helpful colleague does more for mutual understanding than a long speech. Religion itself is ease:

Narrated by Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Religion is ease, and no one is excessive in religion without it overwhelming him. So stay within the right measure, draw as near to perfection as you can, and rejoice. Seek help in this through the beginning of the day, the afternoon and part of the night.”

When it is truly impossible: delay or combine?

Most of the time, the time window is enough: one can pray dhuhr at the end of the lunch break, or ‘asr a little later, while avoiding pushing it back until the sun turns yellow. Some situations remain difficult: operating theater, long on-call shift, production line, exam. An authentic hadith is often mentioned on this subject:

Narrated by ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed dhuhr and ‘asr together, and maghrib and ‘isha’ together, without there being fear or travel.

In other versions reported by Muslim, Ibn ‘Abbas explains that he wanted in this way not to place his community in hardship. This does not mean that one may combine out of mere convenience: scholars discuss its scope.

And if a prayer is missed anyway, through forgetfulness or prevention? One prays it as soon as possible: according to a hadith reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim, whoever forgets a prayer prays it as soon as he remembers. One never prays a prayer before its time, except within the framework of a permitted combining.

Friday, the Jumu‘a prayer

The Friday prayer replaces dhuhr and is performed in congregation, with a sermon. It is obligatory for adult resident men; women may attend.

Quran Al-Jumu'a 62:9-10 · Muhammad Hamidullah’s French translationRead in the Quran

The second verse then invites us to go back to our occupations: work is not the enemy of prayer. In practice, you can shift your lunch break, look for a mosque near the workplace (many offer several times), take a few hours off or arrange your schedule with your manager. If it is truly impossible, you pray dhuhr, and ask for advice about your situation.

Work too can become worship. The Qur’an praises men whom neither trade nor business distracts from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer (surah an-Nur, verse 37). It does not reproach them for trading: it praises their balance. Doing your work well, keeping your commitments, respecting your colleagues and returning to Allah five times a day: it is the same faith, lived at different moments.

Questions fréquentes

Can my employer forbid me to pray at work?

In France, there is no right to a prayer break: prayer takes place during break times or with the employer’s agreement. The internal regulations may also frame the expression of convictions, provided it is justified and proportionate. In case of difficulty, turn to HR or to staff representatives.

How long does it take to pray at work?

An obligatory prayer generally lasts five to ten minutes, wudu included if you have not kept it since the morning. The legal break of at least twenty minutes after six hours of work is therefore often enough for a prayer.

Can you combine dhuhr and ‘asr because of work?

A hadith reported by Muslim mentions combining without fear or travel, but the schools differ on its scope. Some scholars admit it occasionally for a real need, others do not. For a lasting situation, ask a qualified person for an opinion.

Where can you pray when there is no prayer room?

Any clean place will do: an empty office, a free meeting room, a quiet room, a parked car. A folding mat or a clean towel is enough. Avoid places of passage and spaces open to the public.

How can you attend the Friday prayer when you work?

Many mosques offer several sermon times. You can shift your lunch break, take a few hours off or arrange your schedule with your manager. If it is impossible, you pray dhuhr and ask for advice about your situation.
